Flute4 is a team of Carolina-based flutists bonded by friendship, a common enthusiasm for the flute, and a desire to explore and commission flute repertoire within a professional setting. Exploring this music with friends is full of personal rewards, but also contributes to the work within our teaching studios, and renewed excitement for chamber works for flutes. Though the relationships span a few decades, the ensemble formed in 2017, and has appeared at the 2018 National Flute Association convention performing the World Premiere of Thomas McColley’s Behind the Eye. Since then, Flute4 has enjoyed presenting a variety of recitals and masterclasses, and developing new collaborations. Our members are active teachers and perform with orchestras throughout the Carolinas.

Biographies 

Carla Copeland-Burns is a member of the NC Opera Orchestra, Blue Mountain/Forecast, and the Greensboro Symphony and is a frequent performer with the North Carolina Symphony, Carolina Ballet, and for nationally touring Broadway productions. Carla teaches at Duke University and Meredith College, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist. She joined the Clazz Music Festival (Italy) faculty in 2018 and is looking forward to many summers of great music and yummy food. Carla holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati (DMA), New England Conservatory (MM), and Florida State University (BM).

Originally from Blackpool, England, Dr. Caroline J. Ulrich is currently Principal Flute with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and on the faculty at South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities. She has frequently been featured soloist with the GSO and other ensembles, performing works of Bach, Mozart, Ibert, Chaminade, Gluck, Godard, and Lukas Foss. Additionally, Caroline is an active flutist in musical theater. She has performed for numerous national Broadway touring productions including The Sound of Music, Fiddler of the Roof, My Fair Lady, Ragtime, Camelot, Peter Pan, Porgy and Bess, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, and most recently, The Phantom of the Opera. Caroline is active in chamber music both in solo recitals and as part of the GSO Spotlight Series. She has held positions with the Springfield (IL) Symphony, Cedar Falls/Waterloo Symphony, Asheville Symphony, and Augusta Opera. Both the Master and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees were earned from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, and the Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University. Her primary teachers were Charles DeLaney, Alexander Murray, and Felix Skowronek. She has also worked with William Bennett, Carl Hall, Paula Robison, Stephen Preston, and Kyril Magg. In her off time, Caroline enjoys hiking, cooking, and reading. Additionally, she is eager to go shoe shopping with fellow Flute4 member, Amy Orsinger Whitehead!

Pennsylvania native Amy Orsinger Whitehead has played flute in the Charlotte Symphony since 1997. She also performs in the Rhodora Winds, the Laurel Trio, and the Out of Bounds New Music Ensemble. Amy coaches the woodwind section of the Youth Orchestra of Charlotte.  Amy holds flute performance degrees from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Institute of Chamber Music. She has taught flute at Spelman College, Wingate University, Queens University, and is currently on faculty at Davidson College. When not playing her flute, Amy enjoys Zumba, kickboxing, and shopping...especially for shoes!
